Why Do We Call It Happy Hour?
It’s said the US Navy coined the term “Happy Hour,” using the 1920s slang to describe relaxing on-board activities that let them, at least for a short while, forget the drudgery of life at sea. However, the phrase itself appeared much earlier. For instance, in Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice, Lorenzo tells Portia he hopes, “Fair thoughts and happy hours attend you.”
Another theory is that during Prohibition, people were forced to do some “secret drinking” before going out to dinner. They weren’t necessarily called happy hours, but the tradition of people getting together for a few drinks before dinnertime continued long after Prohibition ended. It was sometime in the late 1940s or early 1950s that the term became associated with discount drinks. By the 1980s, it became the social event we know and celebrate today.
